In a disturbing incident, more than 30 children were admitted to the hospital after eating the mid-day meal at a school in Bihar’s Darbhanga district, with reports of a lizard found in the food.

As per the information available, the vegetable served in the mid-day meal was prepared from gram soaked overnight, and a cook said that a dead lizard was found in the food. While eating, a student saw the lizard and screamed loudly and fainted.

Other children complained of stomach aches and vomiting, and 5-6 more kids fainted afterwards. As the health of the children continued to worsen, all of them were rushed to the Biraul Community Health Centre (CHC) for treatment. Doctors have preliminarily suspected food poisoning.

According to doctors, most of the children are out of danger, but some are kept under observation due to their critical condition.

The parents of the children reached the school and demanded action over the incident. At the time of the incident, the school’s headmaster, Amit Kumar Mandal, was reportedly not present on the premises, as he was away on duty as the Block Level Officer’s supervisor, according to NDTV.

However, he immediately rushed back upon hearing about the children’s health. Sanjay Kumar Chaudhary, who was in charge of the mid-day meal, said the matter is being investigated and strict action would be taken against those found guilty.

This is not the first time such an incident has happened in Darbhanga or other parts of Bihar. Recently, dozens of children complained of stomach ache, dizziness and vomiting after consuming the mid-day meal at a school in the Supaul district of Bihar.
