Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to visit Maldives from July 25 to 26, said an official statement. His visit will be followed by his trip to the United Kingdom, where he will be signing the Free Trade Agreement.
Notably, this is the first visit of PM Modi to the Maldives after the ties between the two countries soured due to “India Out” campaign by some Maldivian leaders and Muizzu’s pro-China stance.
PM Modi, who will be the chief guest at the 60th National Day celebrations, is visiting Maldives on invitation of President Muizzu.
Why Is PM Modi’s Visit To Maldives Significant?
Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to the Maldives is seen as a significant opportunity to discuss key issues between the two nations, strengthen bilateral cooperation, and reaffirm India’s commitment to its ‘Neighbourhood First’ policy in the Indian Ocean region.
Earlier, PM Modi visited Maldives in June 2019. On the other hand, Maldivian President Mohamed Muizzu made his first bilateral visit to India in October last year after assuming office.
This visit is being closely watched amid evolving geopolitical dynamics in the region and is expected to play a pivotal role in reshaping diplomatic engagement between the two countries.
PM Modi’s UK Visit
From July 23-24, Prime Minister Narendra Modi will visit the United Kingdom, marking his fourth visit to the nation. During his visit, the Prime Minister will also sign the India-UK FTA in a landmark development in diplomatic ties between the two nations.
